Our Practice History Sunnyvale Optometry was founded in 1946 by Dr. Harry Springer as the first optometric practice in the city of Sunnyvale. He took great pride when his daughter, Dr. Karen Springer, joined him in private practice in 1978. In 1985, Dr. Mark Ichikawa became a proud partner of the expanding practice. Over the years, we continued to grow by word-of-mouth referrals and have served generations of families in the Bay Area community. At present, Dr. Cindy Tran is a part-time associate since she joined the group in 2001. After Dr. Karen Springer retired in 2004, Dr. Mai Nguyen joined the team as a full-time associate. Our practice philosophy is to provide personalized, quality patient care. We make every effort to educate our patients about your eye health concerns and eye care needs. Mark S. Ichikawa, O.D.Dr. Mark Ichikawa graduated from UC Berkeley School of Optometry with highest honors and was the recipient of the contact lens excellence award in his 1984 graduating class. His undergraduate degree is in cellular biology also from UC Berkeley. Dr. Ichikawa is an active member of the American Optometric Association and has served as a trustee for the local Santa Clara County Society. He has also served on the board of a local youth group and is active in his church. In his free time, Dr. Ichikawa enjoys golfing. Dr. Ichikawa and his wife, Jennifer, have two wonderful children: Scott, a graduate of UCLA and Cheryl, a graduate of UC Berkeley. Mai N. Nguyen, O.D.Dr. Mai Nguyen is a Bay Area native. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology from the University of California at Davis in 1999. She earned her doctorate degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, where she graduated with honors. Dr. Nguyen joined Sunnyvale Optometry in 2004 where she enjoys family practice, working with children and providing specialized services such as Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT). She is a proud member of the Santa Clara County Optometric Society, California Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. She is also an active participant of the national eye care InfantSEE program. In her spare time, Dr. Nguyen enjoys being outdoors, snowboarding, live music, rooting for the Chicago Cubs and spending time with friends and family. Cindy H. Tran, O.D.Dr. Cindy Tran received her Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis in 1996. She earned her doctorate degree from the Southern California College of Optometry in 2001. She currently works part-time at Sunnyvale Optometry where she enjoys general family practice. She is an active member of the Santa Clara County Optometric Society, California Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. Joanne C. Gwo, O.D.Dr. Joanne Gwo is a graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry, where she was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UCLA. Her clinical training includes work at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Florida and participation in a Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) trip to Ecuador in 2009.
